Fantasy and rock combined into a brilliant novel. Saga was the greatest band (of mercenaries) of all time, but when the former frontman Golden Gabe shows up at Clay "Slowhand" Cooper's door they'll have to get the band back together to save his daughter. This book is absolutely filled with references and humor and love. Oh and there's a playlist of songs that inspired the book!
HP Lovecraft is one of the greatest writers of horror fiction in American history, but much of his brilliance comes from the fact that he was horrifically racist. This novella by World Fantasy Winner Victor LaValle is a fantastic response and story which reinterprets The Horror at Red Hook, one of Lovecraft's most xenophobic works.
I think that Jewell Parker Rhodes is absolutely one of the best children's book authors out there today. She writes stories that tackle incredibly difficult topics and explain them in a way that doesn't look down on her audience. Black Brother, Black Brother is no exception to that, talking about colorism, prejudice in schooling, and whitewashing of history all wrapped up in a fantastic sports novel!
Everything by Sir Terry Pratchett is absolutely wonderful, but if you are looking for some starting places then Going Postal is a great one. When the Great City of Ankh-Morpork needs to revitalize their postal system, the best man for the job is conman Moist von Lipwig. Absolutely hilarious and my favorite fantasy author of all time!
Naomi Novik's take on the girl was taken by the dragon, except this dragon is a wizard who needs help so taht he can keep a magical evil forest from absorbing the country they live in. Her sort of sequel Spinning Silver is also fantastic!
A techy man in San Francisco who works at a used bookstore gets curious about the customers who check out special books taht aren't for sale.
A collection of short stories by "The God of Short Stories" in Japan by Ryunosuke Akutagawa. In this collection you'll find the stories that inspired the movie Rashomon, stories on Christianity and Buddhism, and many more!
If you want to hear about why Nathaniel loves this one, come in and ask him at the store! There's a lot of gesturing and wild movements involved!
If you love Chinese action flicks and historical kungfu epics then this is the book series for you! I am seriously surprised that this is the first time that Jin Yong has been translated to English for the US.
I love criminal novels and Cate Glass' book about an Renaissance inspired world where being a sorcerer means death is pretty darn brilliant!
Fantastic Books and Where to Find Them pick for April
A really great fantasy detective noir. In a world where the magic has gone away, human detective Fetch Phillips is hired to find a vampiric teacher at a school for the children of the magic races. A really interesting series premise and the worldbuilding is fantastic!
